On 3rd June 1990, Glasgow hosted the biggest free music festival Scotland had ever seen - ‘The Big Day’. Everyone who is anyone is there. The only problem? You and your pals can’t see any of it because you’re stuck in a police holding cell.
Debs, Grace, Fiona and Kirsty have been best pals for as long as they can remember. But now, as they enter their twenties, the changes in the world and within themselves are slowly driving them apart.
The girls have been anticipating Sheena Easton, an artist who grew up in Glasgow herself. However, when Sheena debuts her new accent after months spent in LA, the Scottish crowd is less than impressed. An enraged Fiona throws a glow stick at the stage, resulting in the group getting placed in a temporary holding cell. It is here that they meet Louise, who is also in police custody for reasons unknown to the girls.
The forced proximity allows the group to open up about their own individual struggles as working-class Glaswegian women in the 90s. Together, the group of girls help each other face their dilemmas, and eventually hatch an escape plan in time for the closing act.
